desperate promotion attempt

I should be able to get land some portrait gigs if I do some smart distribution (play my cards right...), don't you think? We went to an opening, and the gallerist likes me. I saw him show my card to several people, and he even gave it away. I was too shy to offer him a pile. Then there was this simply gorgeous looking old lady, and I couldn't resist handing her one on my way out. I told her I would love to do her portrait, and she immediately said yes. I don't think she realized there would be money involved. I told her to think about it. I am like my dear neighbour Garnet, he said promotion to him is like pulling teeth.

One single day, from sketch to final, I love newspaper deadlines! It is about borderline personality disorder, and yes, the art director knows I am drawing a werewolf. I also suggested a vampire and a bull fight, but he preferred the werewolf.

Egoyan.jpg
As my regular readers know, I sometimes like to have fun with impossible jobs that get posted online. This one I got off Craigslist. A magazine cover. Great, I love to do magazine covers. A magazine cover depicting Atom Egoyan no less, the famous film director, wow, interesting. Fee, 40$. Now there's a challenge. First I make sure of course it's not a typo. After all, they may have just forgotten a 0, so I show the magazine people how I do portraits when I get a halfway decent pay. And what do you know, they like my work, but they really don't have more money than 40$. Fair enough, I spend 40 minutes. Exactly 40 minutes, I timed it. I don't even think the result is too bad, I think there is likeness. So I sent them this tiny jpg, and offered to send them the high res version with a 40$ invoice. But unfortunately I heard nothing back. Let's all check the April issue of Lucid Media Magazine to see if it's got Egoyan on the cover!

I have a big colour difference between my Photoshop and my web browser. Much brighter here. But that'll be toned down on news print anyway. I hope. Okay. I went back and toned it down. What you see is the toned down version.

Glorious day today, so I spent as much of it as possible outside, and went shopping. Found this lovely seventies piece in the thrift sore. We used to have a perfectly good teapot, a great teapot. Michiel had it from before he even had me, a personal antique. It was a steel one, but even those don't have eternal life, one day it started leaking terribly. And in the garbage it went. I got an emergency teapot at Value Village, but it was way too small. The white beauty I bought today is nice and big, Michiel and I keep running to the bathroom.

Now what can I say. The editor sent this to me and put "don't be shocked" in the subject line. But that was exactly what happened of course, I was shocked. I would love to do a cover, but a detail from my drawing, lacking essential (Jesus, duh) context? Let's say I am happy I won't accidentally walk into a store to see stacks of these!

is it really an hour later?

I'm not too too sure about this one anymore, but I have been messing with these last two drawings for too long, determined to get them right. I have done changes on the one from Wednesday too. This is it. On to new ones.

And now for some social life. An opening somewhere, I have no idea, we just have to get in our friend's car. I like it that way!

Just watched that House episode about the woman who blogged about everything but her poop, thanks for reminding me BB. Made me realize I blog about less and less. But I really don't want to bore you guys with my poop. I couldn't if I wanted too, our toilet is an American model, poop just drops in the water. In Europe they have these toilets where you can examine what you've done before you flush it. I kind of miss that.

Tomorrow I'll finish the colouring. And start number two. I hope.

My stupid cold finally over, and just as I start to enjoy that, my body reminds me that I am still not out of eggs. Out of Tylenol I was, but my lovely Kristin neighbour brought me a jar. And now I'm exhausted, goodnight.

lamp_post_promo.jpg
Somebody asked me for a PDF with some portraits because he said he says he knows someone he wants to show them too. And hey, I'm all for networking. But the sheet I made also made me think. I know people living off lamp posts in Toronto. What would you think if I'd put them up in Rosedale or The Annex? You think the rich people would go for one?

I was kind of sick since my last drawing. Still am, more or less, and behind schedule. Hence the weekend working. Time to go flat on the couch now.

I'll take another good look at him in the morning and then I am going to have a nice print done for Gerald.

Almost there, almost there. His likeness needs to be spot on, because my whole street knows what Gerald looks like. His hair is going to be white, in a next stage, that will do a lot for the likeness too.
