An auction house in Haarlem is going to sell original Miffy drawings. I read it in the NRC. Illustrations for the very first two Miffy (or Nijntje, in Dutch) books, 1955 and 1957. The seller is anonymous, and Dick Bruna is trying to prevent the auction. High bids from Japan are expected. I wouldn't be at all surprised. Maybe Dick Bruna will bid himself, in secret. The Dutch magazine Quote that -like Forbes in the US- annually publishes a list of the richest people, estimates Bruna's wealth at € 42 million (almost CAN $ 69 million). Great carreer choice, illustration.

I was surprised to see Miffy at Chapters. 'Our' Nijntje! Probably shows my naivite more than anything....

Off-topic: We went to the Dutch Treat borrel for the first time tonight. Always fun to realize you should not gossip about people when said people speak your language. Otherwise, it was fun.

Is the image you have for real? Amazing!

@ Bianca: Gossiping in Dutch anywhere in Toronto is dangerous. Tons of people speak Dutch, or at least understand it.

@ Richard: The photo is from NRC Handelsblad, that would be reputable enough, wouldn't it :-)

Of course. I read NRC too, but missed this yesterday.
I really like the picture. I even blogged about it (mentioning you as the source).

Waarom denk je dat ik jouw tekeningen bewaar?

Jee, zo rijk? Ik zie hem hier regelmatig langs peddelen op z'n fiets en dan niet eens een luxe model, maar meer van ouderwetse kwaliteit...
