Rejoyce fair readers, for the house is done. This is the last detail I show you. Michiel is packing, our Habseligkeiten will await their new residence in boxes. Right now he is vacuuming Otger's room, with a new 150 dollar vacuum hose. Michiel spent his Saturday morning like all real Canadian family men, at Home Depot.
Posted by eliane at October 30, 2004 04:46 PMA *real* Canadian man would spend his Saturday at Rona, not at Home Depot. Home Depot is a U.S chain. A real Canadian man gets a coffee at Tim Horton, not at Starbucks, drinks Molson Canadian, not Coors Light, and eats LOTS of Kraft Dinner. That's what we're having for dinner tonight, eh?
Posted by: michiel at October 30, 2004 05:31 PMYeah, according to Coupland, there is a distinct difference between American and Canadian Kraft Dinners. I think it's way too revolting to try that out, yikes. (We had hutspot with meatballs tonight) (Hutspot: cooked and mashed carrots, onions and patatoes with lots of black pepper, extremely traditional Dutch dish)
Posted by: eliane at October 30, 2004 07:05 PMHutspot, mmmm! ...but with meatballs?
Bijna winter... Heimwee-naar-Hollands-eten-tijd.
Posted by: Bianca at October 30, 2004 08:53 PMIs that the same as meat balls and spagety?
Posted by: Joe Smitherman at October 30, 2004 08:53 PMHutspot should be eaten with herring (to commemorate the liberation of Leiden, in 1574), but I don't know where to find fresh herring in Toronto's west end.
When Leiden was liberated from Spanish occupation by the "Geuzen", they brought along bread and herring for the starving population. When a pot of hustsput (patatoes, carrots and onions) was found in the abandoned Spanish quarters, the Leidenaren had a meal.
It's not a very tasty meal, and people these days prefer to eat hutspot with "klapstuk", brisket.
mmmmm, heerlijk! Hebben jullie ook zuurkool? De poes is prachtig.
Posted by: erica at October 31, 2004 03:57 AMIk wil ook zo'n heet dakje
en iets drinkbaars met een rietje
en dan een week vakantie...
Zuurkool, jazeker. Boerenkool (kale) ook, er wonen in Toronto ongeveer 70.000 Nederlanders, die worden heus wel bediend hoor! Rookworst alleen in de echt Nederlandse winkel helaas, en die is in de boonies.
