Oma in today's newspaper. The Dutch word "oma" for grandmother is one of the few surviving Dutch immigrant words in Canada. All of the second or third generation Dutch Canadians I know still use it. Kind of neat. And then depending on how nice those grandparents are they can say things like "beste paard van 't stal", or "pak voor je broek". Here's a big version.

In Nederland bestaan ook nog twee uitdrukkingen die je gebruikt als iemand je een te sterk verhaal vertelt:

"je zuster op een houtvlot" en

"je opoe op een ouwe fiets".

one of my close friends has an oma, and when they introduced me to her, they said her name was oma, so I sort of have an oma now too.

Oma must have been introduced in Canada around 1954. Many Dutch have left the country in those years.
